CGTantra has been a platform for many young and enthusiastic students and professionals. However, they have initiated CGTantra Community Awards since three years. CCA, unlike other awards of the industry, aims at recognizing the excellence in different aspects and the art forms of Animation, VFX and Gaming Industry.

A contest was held by CG Tantra Community Awards, where the contestants had to create 3D Digital Illustration/Model on the theme topic of "TRIBUTE TO ILM". The competition was open to the students and professionals both. However, their deadline was 10th May, 2011. The competition was initiated on 1st April, 2011.

Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) is an Academy Award-winning motion picture visual effects company that was founded in May 1975 by George Lucas and is owned by Lucasfilm. Its the final challenge! After a year of contests and judging (yes, really that long!), this will be the final matte painting challenge at CG Tantra for a while. These contests have been a great source of inspiration for many of the people taking part, and I hope that they have been a good learning experience along the way too. I'm sure I can speak for both Alex and myself when I say we have been impressed by many of the entries over the months. The world's largest stop-motion animation: Gulp

'Gulp' is a short film created by Sumo Science at Aardman studios, depicting a simple life story of a fisherman. It is shot on a location at Pendine Beach in South Wales. Every frame of this stop-motion animation was shot using a Nokia N8, with its 12 megapixel camera and Carl Zeiss optics. The film has broken a world record for the 'largest stop-motion animation set', with the largest scene stretching over 11,000 square feet.

The entire video was composed of stills taken on Nokia N8 cell phones, sand sculptures and art by a team of sand artists "Sandinyoureye" along-with synchronized efforts by animators, directors, students and volunteers create the environment and movement in the frames.

It's hard not to be awed by the sheer ingenuity of the filmmakers behind this rather adorable little short. Even the sailor in that little boat is a real guy. CGTantra got a chance to catch an interview with the makers of this video, Will and Ed, the directors of Gulp. Michael has been involved with visual effects since he was a young boy, when he created his first miniature shot - a still of a rocket to the moon - in the hallway of his parents' home. He continued experimenting with photography and effects of all sorts until his college years - building projectors, remote camera systems, and experimenting with pyrotechnics (until his ability was outstripped by the explosive power of his concoctions and he wisely left further research to others).

Michael received a Bachelor's degree in Business from California State University, Northridge, in 1966, and was promptly drafted into the Army. Below is the guideline for the contest:

Victorian Shop Test
 Here are two images; one photo to work on and one photo with red highlighting the areas to modify.  The photo is of a modern street here in London, and the brief is to change the street in to a Victorian street, so around the time mid to late 1800's. You will need to remove anything that is modern and replace it with something authentic to the Victorian period. If the above story is to be believed, how are YOU going to perceive it? We don’t have to tell you to imagine, we believe you have already begun the imagination. So start vfxing, we provide you with a footage, a footage of a peaceful noisy polluted Mumbai landscape. You have to return with the same footage but this time Mumbai has been attacked by UFOs. A mother ship with its entourage of more ships is hovering dangerously over the metropolis. We leave it to you what effect this attack has on the landscape.

The Attacks begin on 1st August 2010 and the ravaged footage will have to be submitted on 15th September 2010. You have 45 days. The Contest allows an individual member or a team of 3 people to participate. It is open to students and professionals. The proceedings of the Battle have to be reported at base camp, of course on the CGTantra forum.
